Course Submission Guidelines
Course submission for the GE requires using PDF forms to evaluate the fit of the proposed course with the expectations of the GE component it aims to join. A syllabus is also required. Submissions are reviewed by faculty volunteers from across the university. The course review process varies depending on 1)which GE section the course fits in to and 2) whether it is an existing or new course. All course submissions use the Curriculum Portal, which is generally only accessible to faculty and staff involved in their unit's curriculum processes. Submission guidelines for each category are included below.
Existing courses seeking status in the Foundations:
- Faculty can request approval via the Curriculum Portal.
- Work with the Director of Undergraduate Studies or appropriate support staff member for document submission.
- Must include a completed GE Foundation Course submission form
- Required syllabus should indicate the Foundation category it fits, the associated Goals and Expected Learning Outcomes and a statement explaining how the course connects to the desired Foundation.
- An assessment plan is not required.
- Requests will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee (ASCC).
Existing courses seeking status in the Themes:
- Faculty can request approval via the Curriculum Portal.
- Work with the Director of Undergraduate Studies or appropriate support staff member for document submission.
- Must include a completed GE Theme Course submission form
- Required syllabus should indicate the Theme category it fits with, the associated Goals and Expected Learning Outcomes and a statement explaining how the course connects to the desired Theme.
- An assessment plan is not required.
- Requests will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee (ASCC) with support from faculty with expertise in the content of the desired Theme.
New courses seeking status in a Foundation or Theme:
- Must first be approved by the department and by the relevant college curricular body before advancing to an ASCC subcommittee.
- Work with the Director of Undergraduate Studies or appropriate support staff member in following their college processes for course approval and submission.
- Once approved by the college, course submissions will follow the procedure described above for existing courses seeking to be a part of the Foundations or Themes.
- If the forms required for GE approval are submitted with the initial course request, the submission can advance directly from local (department or college) approval to GE approval.
Theme courses seeking to qualify as 4-credit, Integrative Practice courses:
- Theme courses involving the pedagogies identified in the Implementation Report as qualifying for 4-credit, Integrative Practice status can request this status when the course is submitted to the Theme.
- Submit a completed Integrative Practices Inventory in addition to other required documents. The inventory documents expectations of each high-impact pedagogy and will be reviewed during course approval. The expectations for each practice are provided below.
